Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education is a different way of thinking about physical education!
Outdoor Education provides activities designed to introduce various outdoor skills that will enhance both mental and physical well-being. Emphasis is on skill development, safety practices, responsibility, teamwork and self-awareness through experiential learning. Skills include, but are not limited to, hiking, biking, canoeing, cooperative games, ropes initiatives, orienteering, camping, archery and a variety of outdoor experiences. These courses are held at Newport News Park. Outdoor Education I is a prerequisite for Outdoor Education II.
What classes are offered?
Courses offered are Outdoor Education I and Outdoor Education II. Both courses satisfy the Health & Physical Education requirement. Both courses can be taken during the summer. Each course is 1/2 P.E. credit. Classes are held Monday through Thursday at Newport News Park from 7:30 - 2:00. Transportation from Woodside to the Park is provided.
How much does it cost?
Class is open to Newport News students at the summer school rate of $200 plus a $30 materials fee. Out-of-city students may attend at a cost of $325 plus a $30 materials fee.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION I

Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit: ½ credit per semester OFFERED ONLY THROUGH SUMMER SCHOOL IN TWO SEPARATE SESSIONS

OUTDOOR EDUCATION II

Prerequisites: Outdoor Education I
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit: ½ credit per semester OFFERED ONLY THROUGH SUMMER SCHOOL IN TWO SEPARATE SESSIONS
Outdoor Education provides activities designed to introduce various outdoor skills that will enhance both mental and physical well-being. Emphasis on: skill development, safety practices, responsibility, teamwork and self-awareness through experiential learning. Skills include, but are not limited to: hiking, biking, canoeing, cooperative games, ropes initiatives, orienteering, camping, archery and a variety of outdoor experiences. Outdoor Education II includes an overnight camping experience at NN Park and an extended (within class hours) canoe field trip. This course is also held at Newport News Park.
Health Education
One semester of each health class is required for graduation.
- Course Number: Health I – PE0109, Health II / Driver Ed – PE0209
- Prerequisites: Health I must be taken BEFORE Health II / Driver Ed
- Grade Level: Health I – 9-11, Health II / Driver Ed – 10-12
- Credit: ½ credit per semester
Two semesters of Health are required for graduation. Health Education helps students to develop an understanding of total wellness —physical, mental, and social. It provides skills for students to develop healthy lifestyle behaviors.
Driver Education is part of Health II. Driver Education and Traffic Safety helps the student understand the qualifications, attitudes, and responsibilities of a skillful driver. Emphasis is placed on identifying and managing risks, visual search, defensive driving, knowledge of the legal and financial responsibilities of driving, and the development of basic habits necessary for safe and courteous operation of a vehicle.
