NNPS Partners offer child care for families

Posted: August 28, 2020

Three school division partners are offering full-day childcare for families this fall. The programs are designed to support families who need affordable child care during Newport News Public Schools' virtual schooling for the first quarter of the school year.

Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism's Youth Program, the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsula, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula have restructured their before and after-school care models as full-day programs for families who need child care. Students will be able to complete their schoolwork and access the internet.

The child care partners will serve a limited number of students and conduct frequent cleaning in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Virginia Department of Health guidelines. Parents/guardians are responsible for student transportation to and from the child care sites.

Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism's Youth Programs and the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsula will operate child care programs in several NNPS schools. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula will operate Club Academies in clubs around the Peninsula.

Additional Resource

The Care and Supervision for School-Age Children (CASSAC) program for the Peninsula is a partnership between the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula and Smart Beginnings. Interested families will need to call (757)229-2222 and complete a 5-minute pre-screening. If eligible, additional documents will be requested. Once an applicant has been approved, they will match the applicant with a provider based on the information collected during the pre-screening. The program will cover the enrollment fee along with the cost of the program.
