Social Emotional Learning

In Newport News Public Schools, social emotional learning is an integral component of a tiered system of instruction to improve social well-being, academic performance, and a contributing member to the community. The goal is to provide instruction to gain skills within five social emotional competencies: Self-awareness, social-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and decision-making skills.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
