McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act
The McKinney-Vento Act ensures educational rights and protection for youth and children experiencing homelessness.
Who is considered homeless?
Anyone who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate night time residence is considered homeless. You qualify if you are:
- sharing housing with others due to loss of housing, economic hardship or another similar reason
- living in hotels, motels, trailer parks, camping grounds due to lack of adequate alternative accommodations
- living in emergency or transitional shelters
- abandoned in hospitals/ unaccompanied youth
- awaiting foster care placement
- living in a public/private place not designed for humans to live
- living in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations
- migratory children
Services Provided by Newport News Public Schools
If a student is found eligible for services under the McKinney-Vento Act, the school district provides the following services:
- Transportation for the student(s) whose address is out of school zone
- Free meals
- Clothing & School Supplies
- Resources
