Computer Science at NNPS
What is Computer Science?
Computer science is "the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their applications, and their impact on society" (Tucker et. al, 2006, p. 2).
How is computer science being offered in Newport News Public Schools?
The K-8 Computer Science Standards of Learning are embedded in the general curriculum using an integrated approach as designed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Students will learn each computer science standard in conjunction with core content standards that support and enhance the learning of computer science. The 2021-22 NNPS curriculum provides teachers with one exemplar lesson for each computer science standard. Teachers are encouraged to teach the provided exemplar lesson and to use Open Educational Resources (OER) provided by the VDOE,regional networks, and other educational partners to extend the computer science curriculum.
