Elementary Learning

How will schools address any missed material from the 2019-2020 school year?

The academic plan has been revised to include learning modules that will review and reinforce content that was not covered before mid-March when schools transitioned to virtual learning.

Where can parents monitor progress and access their child’s grades?

Teachers will communicate performance and grades to parents and students regularly and consistently. Grades will be posted weekly in ParentVue and StudentVue in grades 3-5. Teachers in grades pre-kindergarten through second grade will communicate performance and feedback to parents and students through the communication tool identified by the teacher.

How will the Hybrid Learning Model work for elementary students?

Students enrolled in the hybrid learning model will attend school on their assigned two days each week. During the three days that students are not in school, they will continue their learning by logging into Canvas to complete daily assignments and activities that reinforce skills and concepts that were taught during the in-person lessons at school, as well as engage in new learning.

How will the Virtual Learning Model work for elementary students?

Students enrolled in the virtual learning option will engage in four days of at-home learning with some live, virtual instruction from teachers, and one day of independent learning. Virtual instruction may include live video conferencing with a teacher, pre-recorded video lessons to view, and independent work that students will complete on the Canvas learning management system, and/or projects that allow for voice and choice in student assignments.

Will devices and internet connectivity be provided for families who need support?

A Chromebook will be provided for every student in kindergarten through 12th grade to support learning in-person and online.

CoNNected @Home Program: Families without access to the Internet at home may apply for assistance through NNPS. Eligible families may receive low or no-cost access to the Internet to support student learning through a partnership with the Cox Connect to Compete program.

Will elementary students participate in physical education?

In the hybrid learning model, physical education (PE) will be conducted while physical distancing is practiced. Teachers and students must wear face coverings. Classes, which will be limited in size, will be held outdoors whenever possible.

Proper hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette and physical distancing will be taught. Signs and floor/field markings will be used to ensure physical distancing.

Students will sanitize hands before and after PE instruction. Teachers will disinfect equipment between classes.

Will students have recess?

Students participating in hybrid learning will have outdoor recess when possible. Physical distancing will be required and equipment will be sanitized between uses.

Will elementary students participate in art and music classes?

Students will receive art and music instruction in both the hybrid and virtual models, with adaptations to maintain distance and safety.

How will students use the library?

Students may check out books online and have them delivered to classrooms. Returned books will be sanitized for their next use. Librarians will assist with research and offer virtual book clubs.


Middle School Learning

How will the Hybrid Learning Model work for middle students?

Students enrolled in the hybrid learning model will attend school on their assigned two days each week. Assignments may include reading, writing, listening, viewing instructional videos, and/or experimenting in virtual labs.

How will music instruction be different?

Since group singing and sharing instruments are not advised while social distancing guidelines are in place, music teachers will alter the in-class curriculum to focus on creative processes, critical thinking and communication, historical and cultural influences, and innovations in the arts.

Choral and instrumental students participating in hybrid learning will be encouraged to practice singing and playing at home, maintain practice logs or journals, and create recordings at home for feedback from the teacher.

Students enrolled in virtual learning may record themselves singing and/or playing musical selections as advised by the teacher.

Will library services and books to check out be available to students?

Will students still take Behind the Wheel Driver Education?

Behind the Wheel Driver Education is permitted in Phase III. When offering in-car instruction, students and staff are required to wear cloth face coverings and gloves. Stringent cleaning and disinfecting protocols will be followed before and after each lesson.
Daily health screenings (questionnaires) will be required for staff and students participating in in-car instruction. Anyone who feels ill or has symptoms of COVID-19 should not participate in in-car instruction.
